Background: Haldin is, or rather was, a store owner in Astrael before the Curse. He survived while his family did not. Haldin has tried to get the shop up and running again but various things kept ending his endeavors - notably the take over of the Lich Lord. In truth, Haldin has no heart to actually continue his family's business so when he was approached by Philippe to ride a dragon he figured it had to be more exciting than trying to get the shop back up - and rebuilding it. Apparently two-hundred years meant a total rebuild which he was not looking forward to.
